In my experience powerpoints can be a very effective tool for presentations, and teaching, but sometimes they fall a little short and do not really contribute to the ultimate goal of engaging the audience. I find myself losing interest in powerpoint presentations that have an overwhelming amount of text on them, and do not contain many interesting pictures. As a teaching tool, I often times become frustrated with powerpoints that are too simple. For example, ones with key words and they teacher dictates the definition; it would be more helpful for the teacher to include at least an abbreviated version of the definition on the slide.
